Academic Service Learning (ASL)

The term "academic service learning" refers to community-based service opportunities that are    embedded within credit-bearing courses and relate to course objectives. The ASL initiative aims to make UW-Superior a regional leader in academic service learning, thus providing a distinctively public quality to UW-Superior's liberal arts mission.

2006-2007

  • Searched for and hired AmeriCorp VISTA volunteer to initiate ASL programming

2007-2008

  • Creation of ASL Advisory Group and development of priorities and budget
  • Search for and hire ASL Coordinator to start on July 1, 2008

2008-2009

  • Faculty professional development opportunities and incentives to incorporate service learning into the curriculum
  • Establishment of "Academic Service Learning Center"
  • Hire support staff
  • Hiring of ASL Center Director and support staff (1.50 FTE)
  • Expansion of faculty professional development opportunities and incentives to integrate academic service learning across the curriculum
