Emile Mathis gives $500,000 for UW-Superior student center project

(Aug. 29, 2006) An art expert and gallery owner who received his introduction to art at the University of Wisconsin-Superior is giving $500,000 toward reconstruction of the university's student center.

Emile Mathis, owner of Mathis Gallery and Frame Shop in Racine, Wis., is making his gift to Campaign Superior: Higher Expectations. One of the campaign's goals is to raise $4 million toward reconstruction of Rothwell Student Center. Specifically, Mr. Mathis' gift will be dedicated to construction of a special art gallery and collection space in the student center.

Mr. Mathis said he’s making the gift to honor the people who influenced his life.

“There have been several people in my life who have helped point me in the direction I ended up going,” he said. “My parents, of course, and my teachers through the years, especially in high school and college, had a tremendous influence. I’ve had, and have, some great friends over the years who’ve been helpful, too, and I need to mention those who’ve patronized my business and made it the successful endeavor it has been.”

Mr. Mathis, a Superior native, graduated from UW-Superior in 1968 with a bachelor of fine arts degree. After working for an art dealer based in Great Britain, he decided in 1972 to open his own gallery using his personal collection as inventory at the beginning. Over the years he has become an internationally recognized dealer in prints and an authority on the prints of artist Seymour Haden.

Each fall since 1998, Mr. Mathis has brought a major art exhibit to UW-Superior's Kruk Gallery. Characteristically, he uses the exhibits to share his knowledge at public receptions, gallery talks and by working with student curators.

"Emile has a long history of supporting UW-Superior and our community by providing student scholarships and bringing museum-quality art exhibits to campus," said Chancellor Julius Erlenbach. "We are grateful for his support over the years, and we salute his latest and very generous gift to Campaign Superior. It will create a legacy that benefits students and Superior for generations to come."

Campaign Superior: Higher Expectations is a comprehensive plan to ensure UW-Superior provides the facilities, programs, and support needed for students to become active learners and engaged citizens for the 21st century. The campaign, unveiled in July 2004, already has raised $11.4 million. Its goal is to raise $17.5 million by 2009.
