Campus Safety Office - Crime Alert

Updated: September 9, 2008

If a series of similar crimes occurs on campus or in the community, the Campus Safety Office will post special information on this page to alert you to the situation.

September 9, 2008

A student reported that her vehicle parked in lot #5 near Ross Hall was broken into at some time between 3:30pm on 09/08/08 and 12:30pm on 09/09/08 and had it's ignition switch punched out in an attempted automobile theft.  This vehicle had an ignition switch that is not susceptible to being started by punching the ignition switch.  This attempted vehicle theft was unsuccessful.

April 15, 2008

There were four parked vehicle break-in's in the overnight hours that are currently being investigated by UW-S Campus Safety.  We would like to take this occasion to give a reminder to all individuals that park their vehicles on UW-S property to keep all items of any value locked in an area that cannot be seen from the outside or take them with you when you leave your vehicle.  With the warmer weather a rise in vehicle break-ins normally tends to follow.  Please do your part to safe guard your vehicles and your valuable items.

March 14, 2008

At about 5:00pm a UW-S student reported that she had some of her personal items that she had left unattended in the Health and Wellness Center stolen. There have been other reports of several similar thefts of unattended items responded to by Campus Safety Officers in the recent past. On a few occasions there has been entry made into several lockers in the men's and women's locker rooms where several personal items have been reported to have been stolen as well.

There have been several new security methods introduced to the Health and Wellness Center area to try to help reduce this risk. It is always a good idea to ensure that your personal items are safely secured out of sight in a locked locker or given to the front desk staff to hold until you are done using the facility. Another possible suggestion to help reduce this risk is to not bring your personal items into the facility at all, if you can possibly do without them for your time spent working out or participating in an event.

Please try to do your part to try to help the University reduce this risk in our wonderful athletic facility that is used by so many people from our campus and many surrounding areas. If you should happen to observe someone that seems to be acting suspiciously in the facility please contact the front desk staff or any Health and Wellness Staff personnel in the black shirts with the yellow printing on the front as soon as possible with a description of the person and a last known location or where they appeared to be heading. The Health and Wellness staff personnel will then contact Campus Safety if need be.

The suspicious person and vehicle turned out to be one of our Grounds Crew personnel in an older model white Grounds Crew truck. He happened to be in the lot and saw that the female student was carrying a heavy load and tried to be of assistance to her. He did not properly identify himself and the truck was not clearly marked. Any staff member or student that is attempting to offer help to anyone else in the future should clearly identify themselves to avoid this kind of situation.

A white older model pickup truck with an older white male in his late 70’s with long hair was in Lot #3B (Crownhart Lot) at 3:00pm this afternoon (11/15/07) and asked a female student if she needed a ride.  If anyone sees an older model white pickup truck with an older male with long hair in it in any of our parking lots or around campus please call Campus Safety at 394-8114 or Superior Police Department at 911 immediately and give a location and any other information about the truck, license plate number, or the male that can be given.

July 9, 2007

At 11:00am a white male, 5’8”, medium build, late 20’s, short blond hair, much acne on a clean shaven face, dirty blue jeans, was last seen wearing a dark blue sweat shirt with white printing on it (which was later found near Old Main), was observed looking into vehicles parked on Mortorelli Drive.  He was approached near the stadium south ticket booth and asked for identification at which point he took off running west towards lot #3.  Campus Safety pursued him on foot to lot #3 and lost sight of him as he crossed Catlin Avenue.  He left behind a purse that he had taken from a vehicle that was parked on Mortorelli Drive.  The owner was contacted by Campus Safety and the Superior Police Officers that responded to the area, and the scene, shortly after being contacted by Campus Safety.  The vehicle had its passenger side front window smashed in to remove the purse that was in plain view.  There was one other vehicle on Mortorelli Drive that had its passenger side rear window smashed in, but nothing was taken from it.  The Superior Police Department has the description of the suspect and is looking for him in conjunction with Campus Safety.   If this person is seen on, or near campus, please call 394-8114 or 911 with his location.

This is a friendly reminder that items of value should be stored away out of sight to help ensure the lesser likelihood of a possible vehicle break-in.

June 7, 2006

A young white male appearing to be between 18-20 years of age, about 5'9" tall with a medium build, short brown hair, clean shaven, jeans, white t-shirt with a blue shirt over it, and possibly acne on one side of his face, has been seen going into unlocked offices and is suspected in several Burglary's in which he is believed to have stolen several dollars in cash and a cell phone from unattended purses. He has been observed in several of our buildings on several occasions. He will tell you that he is looking for a rest room or would like to use a phone or phone book as a reason that he is in your office area. Please try to be observant of anyone that might fit this description and contact us immediately if you see him. Try to keep an eye on where he goes so we may try to stop him for questioning. Also, please try to remember to secure your personal belongings and lock and close your office doors when you leave them even for a very short time. Let's all try not to give him any further reasons to be working our fine campus. Thank you!

Campus Community,

There has been an increase in the amount of e-mail Phishing scams over the past several weeks.  The following information includes a definition of Phishing and steps you take to protect yourself.

Phishing

Phishing is a scam in which an email message directs the email recipient to click on a link that takes them to a web site where they are prompted for personal information such as a pin number, social security number, bank account number or credit card number.  Both the link and web site may closely resemble an authentic web site however, personal accounts may be accessed.  If you receive one of these emails:

1.  Do not click on the link.  In some cases, doing so may cause malicious software to be downloaded to your computer.

2.  Delete the email message.

3.  Do not provide any personal information in response to any email if you are not the initiator of the request.

Potentially Violent Situations (non-emergency)

Other potentially violent situations involving harassing or obscene telephone calls, mail or e-mail threats, confrontations, etc., should be handled with your supervisor/campus safety and/or the affirmative action officer as the situation dictates.

Any non-emergency incidents that are criminal in nature or believed to be criminal and occurred on campus or during the conduct of University business off campus should be reported to Campus Safety at 8114.

Request a Campus Safety escort across campus or to your vehicle if you are concerned about your personal safety.

Resident Hall Students: Please be advised that it was reported on 9/24/03 to Campus Safety a female observed an unknown male in the women's shower area. The male ran from the area once the student turned around. At this time Campus Safety has begun an investigation and has a possible suspect. Should you observe a suspicious male in the building please call Campus Safety immediately at 394-8114 or extension 8114. It should be noted that at no time did the suspect try to make physical contact with the female student.

Everyone,
The Department of Campus Safety has been receiving numerous reports from other Universities concerning a "Phone Scam" that is taking place. At this time both Oshkosh and Platteville have been receiving reports from students informing them they won a scholarship. The caller seeks bank information, SSN information, mothers maiden name along with additional information that can be used for identify theft, credit card or bank scams. In all of the reported cases that we're aware of at this time the students did not provide the information the caller was seeking. Should you receive or hear of such a call at UWS we ask that you immediately contact Campus Safety at extension 8114.
Thank You,
Mike Wallin
Director of Campus Safety

Please remember to keep your doors locked when you leave your room or office area. There are people on our campus that look at an unlocked, unoccupied room as a nice place to shop for items that he or she might believe that they need but do not have. Please do not make yourself a victim of this type of crime by being careless with your own personal physical security. Make them work for their wares...lock yourdoors!
